Every time you open the Calculator app to do quick math, you’re taking at least three unnecessary steps: find the app, open it, type the numbers. Spotlight eliminates all of that. Swipe down, type your calculation, see the answer. Open Spotlight
iPhone/iPad: Swipe down from the middle of the Home Screen. Mac: Press Cmd+Space. The Spotlight search bar appears.

The Calculator app has its place for long sequences of calculations, but for quick one-off math — splitting a bill, figuring out a tip, converting a recipe measurement, checking an exchange rate — Spotlight is objectively faster. The key advantages:
No context switch. You don’t leave whatever app you’re in. Swipe down, calculate, swipe up, and you’re back where you started. The Calculator app takes you out of your current workflow.
See the full expression. Unlike the Calculator app (which only shows the running total), Spotlight displays your entire expression as text. You can see “(150 + 89) / 3” and the result simultaneously, making it easy to spot typos.
Natural language. You can type “15% of 200” or “$50 in euros” in plain English. The Calculator app only accepts mathematical notation.

Tips for Power Users
Use parentheses. Spotlight respects order of operations, but if you want to be explicit, parentheses work perfectly: (24 + 6) * 3 gives 90, while 24 + 6 * 3 gives 42.
Chain conversions. You can combine math with conversions: 5 * 12 km in miles calculates 60 km and converts it to miles in one step.
Swipe down from anywhere. On iPhone, Spotlight is accessible from any Home Screen page and even from the Lock Screen (swipe right then down, or swipe down from the top-center on newer iOS). There’s nowhere on your phone where math is more than one gesture away.
