Guide

What Is a Beta Profile?

A beta profile is a configuration provided by Apple that lets you receive pre-release software updates on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or Apple TV. With a beta profile installed, your device gains access to upcoming features weeks or even months before the general public release.

Since iOS 16.4, Apple has simplified the enrollment process. You no longer need to download a separate configuration file. Instead, you can enable beta profiles directly from Settings → General → Software Update → Beta Updates using your Apple ID. This applies to both Developer Beta and Public Beta tracks.

Developer Beta vs. Public Beta Profile

Apple offers two beta tracks for each platform. The Developer Beta profile is released first — typically at WWDC in June — and receives more frequent updates. It may contain more bugs but gives the earliest access to new features. The Public Beta profile arrives a few weeks later and is generally more stable, making it better suited for daily-use devices.

Which Devices Support Beta Profiles in 2026?

Beta profiles are available for iOS 26 (iPhone), iPadOS 26 (iPad), macOS Tahoe (Mac), watchOS 26 (Apple Watch), tvOS 26 (Apple TV), and visionOS 26 (Apple Vision Pro). Visit our Compatibility Checker to confirm your specific device is supported.

What Is an IPSW Beta File?

An IPSW beta file is the complete firmware image for Apple devices running beta software. IPSW stands for iPhone Software and these files allow you to perform a clean install or restore your device to a specific beta version using Finder on Mac or iTunes on Windows. IPSW beta downloads are especially useful when over-the-air (OTA) updates fail, when you want a fresh installation, or when you need to downgrade from a newer beta to an older signed version.

You can browse and download the latest IPSW beta files for all iPhone models in our IPSW Beta Download section below, powered by real-time data from Betaprofile.dev.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Apple beta profiles, IPSW beta files, and the beta program.

A beta profile is a configuration from Apple that enables your device to receive pre-release software updates. Since iOS 16.4, you can enroll directly via Settings → General → Software Update → Beta Updates with your Apple ID. Both Developer and Public beta profiles are free.
Yes, both Public and Developer beta profiles are completely free. Apple removed the $99 Developer Beta fee in 2023. Sign in at developer.apple.com or beta.apple.com with your Apple ID to get started.
An IPSW beta file is the complete firmware image for Apple devices. IPSW stands for iPhone Software. You can use it to perform a clean install via Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows). Connect your device in DFU/Recovery mode, hold Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) while clicking Restore, then select the downloaded IPSW file.
Public Beta profiles are generally safer for daily use. Developer Betas can be unstable with bugs, battery drain, and app compatibility issues. Always back up your device before installing any beta. If stability is critical, wait for the Public Beta release.
No. Since iOS 16.4, install directly via Settings → General → Software Update → Beta Updates. A computer is only needed for IPSW beta clean installs or downgrades.
This is normal after any beta update. Your device re-indexes Spotlight, Photos, and other system services in the background. Battery life typically returns to normal within 24–48 hours. Keep your device charged and connected to Wi-Fi during this period.
iPhone/iPad/Mac: Yes, you can downgrade via DFU mode using an IPSW file. Note that downgrading erases your device. Apple Watch: Cannot be downgraded from beta — it must be sent to Apple. Always keep a backup before installing beta profiles.
The Developer Beta profile is released first (usually at WWDC) and updated more frequently, but may have more bugs. The Public Beta profile arrives a few weeks later and is generally more stable. Both are free and accessible with an Apple ID. Developers testing app compatibility should use the Developer Beta, while everyday users may prefer the Public Beta.

How to Download and Install a Beta Profile in 2026

Installing a beta profile on your Apple device has never been easier. Whether you want to try the latest iOS 26 features on your iPhone or explore macOS Tahoe on your Mac, the process is straightforward and completely free.

Step-by-Step: Install a Beta Profile on iPhone or iPad

Open Settings on your device, then navigate to General → Software Update → Beta Updates. Sign in with your Apple ID if prompted. You will see options for Developer Beta and Public Beta. Select the track you prefer, go back to Software Update, and tap Download and Install when the beta update appears.

How to Use IPSW Beta Files for a Clean Install

If you prefer a fresh installation or need to recover from a failed OTA update, IPSW beta files are the way to go. Download the correct IPSW beta file for your device model from our IPSW Beta Download section. Connect your device to a Mac or PC, open Finder or iTunes, and put your device into Recovery or DFU mode. Hold the Option key (Mac) or Shift key (Windows) while clicking Restore, then select the downloaded IPSW beta file.

Supported Devices for Beta Profiles in 2026

Apple supports beta profiles across its entire ecosystem. iOS 26 beta profile is available for iPhone 12 and later. iPadOS 26 beta profile supports iPad (10th gen), iPad Air (M1 and later), iPad Pro (M1 and later), and iPad mini (6th gen and later). macOS Tahoe beta profile supports most Macs from 2020 onward. Check our Compatibility Checker for your specific model.

Tips for Running Beta Software

  • Always back up your device before installing any beta profile via iCloud or Finder.
  • Expect battery drain for the first 24–48 hours as the system re-indexes.
  • Some third-party apps may crash or behave unexpectedly on beta software.
  • Use the Feedback app to report bugs directly to Apple.
  • If you need to go back, you can downgrade using an IPSW file — but this will erase your device.
