If you're the kind of person who prefers a clean install over an over-the-air update, or you've run into a stubborn OTA bug that won't go away, IPSW files are your best friend. This guide covers everything about iOS 27 Beta IPSW downloads — what they are, where to get them, which file matches your exact iPhone model, and how to install them without losing your data (or how to do a clean wipe if that's what you want).

What Is an IPSW File, Exactly?

IPSW stands for "iPhone Software" — Apple's official firmware file format used to install or restore iOS on iPhones (and iPadOS on iPads). Think of it as a complete, self-contained package that has everything your device needs to run: the operating system, all built-in apps, drivers, frameworks, and system files.

What's Inside an IPSW File

Unlike OTA (over-the-air) updates that only download the pieces that changed since your current version, an IPSW contains the complete firmware. That's why the files are large — typically 5 to 8 GB depending on the device model.

Why Use IPSW Instead of OTA?

Most people install iOS betas through the OTA method (Settings → Software Update). That's perfectly fine for most situations. But there are specific scenarios where IPSW installation is the better — or only — option:

Clean Install

Start fresh. Wipe all data, cached junk, and leftover files from previous betas. Gives you the purest possible beta experience with no baggage.

OTA Failures

When the over-the-air update gets stuck downloading, fails verification, or hangs during installation — IPSW bypasses all of those issues.

Downgrade

Want to go back to iOS 26 from iOS 27 beta? You need an IPSW file. OTA doesn't support downgrading — it only goes forward.

Offline Install

Once you've downloaded the IPSW, you can install it on multiple devices without re-downloading. Great for developers managing several test phones.

iOS 27 Beta IPSW files will be available June 8, 2026 immediately after the WWDC keynote. Until then, you can download the latest iOS 26 IPSW files from our live download center.

What Is Signing Status and Why It Matters

This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of IPSW installation. Apple controls which firmware versions can be installed on your device through a system called signing. Here's how it works:

Signed ✅

Apple's servers are actively authorizing this version. You can install it right now. Your device contacts Apple during installation to verify — if it gets the green light, installation proceeds.

Unsigned 🔒

Apple has stopped authorizing this version. Installation will fail even if you have the file. There is no workaround. Apple typically stops signing older versions 1-2 weeks after a newer release.

Why This Matters for Beta Users

If you install iOS 27 Beta and want to downgrade to iOS 26, you need Apple to still be signing iOS 26. Once they stop, you're stuck on the beta until the public release. Our IPSW download page shows real-time signing status for every version so you'll always know what's still installable.

Requirements Before You Start

Checklist

Mac or Windows PC — IPSW installation requires Finder or iTunes
USB cable — preferably Apple's original cable
10-15 GB free disk space — for the IPSW file plus extraction
Correct IPSW file — matching your exact iPhone model
Full backup — iCloud and/or encrypted computer backup
50%+ battery — or iPhone connected to power

How to Install IPSW While Keeping Your Data

This method installs the new firmware over your existing data — your apps, photos, messages, and settings stay intact. It's the equivalent of an OTA update, but using a file on your computer instead.

1

Download the IPSW file

Go to our IPSW Beta Download section, select your exact iPhone model, and download the iOS 27 Beta IPSW. Save it somewhere easy to find on your computer.

2

Connect iPhone and open Finder/iTunes

Plug in your iPhone via USB. On Mac, open Finder and select your iPhone in the sidebar. On Windows, open iTunes and click the phone icon. Tap "Trust" if prompted.

3

Hold Option/Shift and click "Check for Update"

This is the key step. Hold Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) and click "Check for Update" — NOT "Restore." A file picker opens. Select the downloaded IPSW file.

Mac

⌥ Option + "Check for Update"

Windows

⇧ Shift + "Check for Update"

4

Wait for verification and installation

Finder/iTunes will verify the IPSW with Apple's servers (this is the signing check), extract the firmware, and install it. Your iPhone will restart several times. Do not disconnect the cable. Takes about 15-25 minutes.

How to Clean Install via IPSW (Erases Everything)

A clean install wipes your device completely and installs iOS 27 Beta from scratch. This is useful when you want a fresh start, when your device has accumulated bugs from multiple beta updates, or when you're repurposing a secondary device for testing.

This Erases Everything

All apps, photos, messages, settings — gone. Make absolutely sure your backup is complete and verified before proceeding. You've been warned.

The process is nearly identical to the update method, with one critical difference: in Step 3, instead of clicking "Check for Update," you hold Option/Shift and click "Restore iPhone." This tells Finder/iTunes to wipe the device before installing the firmware.

Update

Keeps your data intact

⌥/⇧ + "Check for Update"

Restore

Erases everything, clean slate

⌥/⇧ + "Restore iPhone"

Troubleshooting Common IPSW Issues

"This firmware is not compatible"

You downloaded the IPSW for the wrong iPhone model. Every model has a unique file — iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max use different files. Go back to our download page, check your model in Settings → General → About, and download the correct one.

"The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14)"

Error 14 usually means the IPSW file is corrupted or incomplete. Delete it and re-download. If the problem persists, try a different USB cable or USB port. Error 14 can also appear when the USB connection drops momentarily during installation.

"This version is no longer being signed"

Apple has stopped signing this firmware version. There's no fix — you cannot install an unsigned IPSW regardless of method. You'll need to download the latest signed version instead. Our download page shows real-time signing status so you always know what's available.

Finder/iTunes doesn't detect iPhone

Try a different cable (Apple original works best). Switch USB ports. On Mac, make sure macOS is up to date. On Windows, reinstall iTunes. If the device still isn't detected, put it into Recovery Mode first: Volume Up → Volume Down → hold Side Button until the recovery screen appears.

Installation takes forever or gets stuck

IPSW installations can take 15-30 minutes depending on your USB speed and computer. If the progress bar hasn't moved in over 30 minutes, force-restart your iPhone (Volume Up → Volume Down → hold Side Button) and try again. Consider using a USB-C cable instead of USB-A for faster transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

IPSW stands for "iPhone Software." It's Apple's complete firmware file format containing the entire iOS operating system. Unlike OTA updates that download only the changes, an IPSW file includes every system file, framework, and driver — typically 5-8 GB in size.

Yes, as long as you download from trusted sources that link to Apple's CDN (updates.cdn-apple.com). Never download from unknown third-party sites. Our download links point directly to Apple's servers — we never host or modify firmware files.
It depends. "Update" (Option/Shift + Check for Update) preserves your data. "Restore" (Option/Shift + Restore iPhone) erases everything. Always back up before either method.
Signing status indicates whether Apple's servers will authorize installation. "Signed" means you can install it. "Unsigned" means Apple stopped authorizing it and installation will fail. Apple typically stops signing older versions 1-2 weeks after a new release.
Developer Beta IPSW files will be available on June 8, 2026, immediately after the WWDC keynote. Public Beta IPSW files typically follow in mid-July 2026.
