How to Check Your AirPods Firmware
With the AirPods connected, open Settings on the iPhone or iPad, tap Bluetooth, then the ⓘ next to your AirPods, and scroll to About; the version is listed there. On a Mac it is under System Settings → Bluetooth → ⓘ next to the AirPods.
Compare it with the table above. A lower version is not a fault — updates arrive in stages and only while the conditions below are met.
How to Update AirPods Firmware
There is no update button. Firmware installs on its own when the AirPods are in their case, the case is charging, and an iPhone, iPad or Mac on the latest software is nearby with Wi-Fi. Leave them like that for at least half an hour, lid closed, then check the version again. AirPods Max update while charging from their cable.
If it still will not move, reset the AirPods and repeat. Make sure the iPhone itself is current first — our update guide covers that — because new firmware often needs the matching iOS.
Beta firmware is a separate programme for developers; installing AirPods beta firmware explains how it works and who it is for.
