How to Install the tvOS 27 Beta on Apple TV

tvOS is the easiest place to try Apple's next-generation software: the Apple TV holds no personal data to lose, most streaming apps are maintained by large teams, and if something breaks you can factory-reset in ten minutes without losing anything that matters.

That makes the tvOS 27 beta the perfect first beta — and the new Liquid Glass interface looks spectacular on a living-room screen.

1. 1Confirm the right account

   On the Apple TV open Settings > Users and Accounts and verify the signed-in Apple Account is the one you enrolled in the beta program.

2. 2Turn on beta updates

   Go to Settings > System > Software Updates and switch on Get Beta Updates. The toggle only appears for enrolled accounts.

3. 3Install

   Select Update Software on the same screen. The box downloads tvOS 27, restarts once, and boots into the beta — five to ten minutes end to end.

4. 4Re-test your main apps

   Open your top streaming apps and give AirPlay a quick try. If an app misbehaves, check the App Store for an update before blaming the beta.

After installing

Beta builds arrive automatically every couple of weeks while the toggle stays on. The Apple TV installs them overnight on its own — the most hands-off beta experience Apple offers.

Before You Start: What This Actually Involves

There is no profile to download and no file to find. Apple removed configuration profiles from the beta process in iOS 16.4, and tvOS 27 is enrolled through your Apple Account instead — you sign in once in a browser, then pick the channel on the device itself. Anything offering you a "tvOS 27 beta profile" download is offering something that has not existed for years, and our piece on those files explains what they usually contain instead.

Enrolment is free on both channels. The developer channel receives each build first; the public channel gets a later, more settled build two to three weeks behind. On a device you depend on, that lag is a benefit rather than a cost — the builds carrying the serious regressions have already been replaced by the time the public channel sees them.

Free space is the requirement people underestimate. tvOS 27 wants roughly 5 GB free before the installer will begin — considerably more than the download size, because it unpacks the new system alongside the one you are running. Check before you start rather than after the download finishes.

Can Your Device Run tvOS 27?

Being on the compatibility list and getting every feature are two different questions. Apple Intelligence in particular is gated well above the compatibility floor, and has never been part of tvOS on any model at all. A device can be fully supported and still show none of it.

Getting Back Out

Turning off Beta Updates stops new builds but leaves you on the one you have until the finished release overtakes it. To go back sooner you need a recovery-mode restore from a signed IPSW, which erases the device — so the archived backup you make before installing is the only route back with your data.
