The soft exit — works on every device
On every Apple platform the gentle route is identical: turn Beta Updates off and wait. Your device keeps the build it has and rejoins the stable channel as soon as Apple ships a public release with a higher version number.
No erase, no restore, no data risk. The ideal moment is Release Candidate season, when the beta build and the public release converge into the same software.
iPhone and iPad — the only instant exit
These are the only devices where you can leave immediately. Restore the current signed release with Finder or the Apple Devices app, then load your pre-beta archived backup. The full procedure is in our downgrade guide.
Cost: an erase and roughly 40 minutes. Requirement: the archived backup made before you installed the beta.
Mac — easiest of all, if you planned ahead
If you installed the macOS beta on a separate APFS volume, leaving takes ten seconds: delete the volume in Disk Utility and your main system is untouched.
If the beta went onto your main volume, your options are the soft exit or a Time Machine rollback — erase in Recovery, reinstall the stable macOS, then restore the pre-beta backup.
Apple Watch, HomePod, Vision Pro and AirPods — no way back
None of these devices offer a user-accessible downgrade. Apple Watch has no cable restore at all. HomePod restores reinstall the enrolled channel's build. AirPods firmware cannot be rolled back by any means. Vision Pro needs Apple's Developer Strap or a service visit.
For all four, the soft exit is the only exit: switch the toggle off and ride the beta to the public release. This is precisely why we recommend joining betas late on these devices — or not at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does leaving the beta program downgrade my device?
No. Turning Beta Updates off only stops future betas; the installed build stays. To move to an older version you have to restore, which is a separate procedure and only possible on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
When is the best time to leave the beta program?
At Release Candidate time, usually early September. The RC and the public release are typically the same build, so switching the toggle off then puts you on stable software with no restore at all.
Can I leave the Apple Watch beta?
Only softly — turn Beta Updates off in the Watch app and wait for the public release. Apple Watch has never offered a downgrade or cable restore of any kind.
Will I be removed from the beta program entirely?
Switching the device toggle off only affects that device. Your Apple Account stays enrolled, so you can rejoin any time — or leave the programme itself from beta.apple.com if you prefer.
