iOS 27 is Apple's biggest iPhone release in years, and you don't have to wait until fall to run it. Since Apple retired configuration profiles, beta access is tied to your Apple Account — which means installation now takes about five minutes and happens entirely inside Settings.
This guide walks you through the whole journey: choosing between the developer and public beta, making the one backup you will genuinely regret skipping, enrolling, installing, and — if the beta isn't for you — finding your way back to iOS 26.

1Create an archived backup
Connect your iPhone to a computer, open Finder (macOS) or Apple Devices (Windows), select the phone and choose "Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac". Tick "Encrypt local backup" so Health, keychain and app passwords are included.
Pro tip: On a Mac, right-click the backup in Finder's Manage Backups window and choose "Archive" — this locks it against being overwritten by automatic backups.

2Pick your channel and enroll
For the developer beta (newest builds, first to get features, least stable) sign in once at developer.apple.com with your Apple Account and accept the agreement. For the public beta (same features, about a week behind, critical fixes applied) enroll at beta.apple.com instead.

3Enable Beta Updates on the iPhone
Open Settings > General > Software Update and tap Beta Updates. Choose iOS 27 Developer Beta or iOS 27 Public Beta. If the menu doesn't appear, confirm you're signed in with the same Apple Account you enrolled, then restart the Settings app.

4Download and install
Back in Software Update, the latest iOS 27 beta appears as a normal update. Tap Update Now, keep the phone on Wi-Fi and power, and let it reboot. First boot after a major beta takes longer than usual — that's normal.

5Stay on the beta train

After installing
Give the beta 24–48 hours before judging performance — Spotlight reindexing and photo analysis hammer the battery at first. If a daily-driver app breaks, check the developer's TestFlight page for a beta-compatible build before rolling back.
Troubleshooting
Beta Updates menu doesn't show iOS 27
Sign out of nothing — instead verify the enrolled account under Settings > [your name], then visit developer.apple.com or beta.apple.com once more while signed in. The menu appears within a minute of a successful enrollment.
Update fails to verify or install
Free up at least 15 GB of storage, toggle Airplane Mode off/on to reset the connection, and retry. Persistent failures are usually Apple's CDN being hammered on release day — wait an hour.
Battery drains fast after installing
Expected for the first day or two while background indexing completes. If it persists past 48 hours, check Settings > Battery for a misbehaving app and report it via Feedback Assistant.
Before You Start: What This Actually Involves
There is no profile to download and no file to find. Apple removed configuration profiles from the beta process in iOS 16.4, and iOS 27 is enrolled through your Apple Account instead — you sign in once in a browser, then pick the channel on the device itself. Anything offering you a "iOS 27 beta profile" download is offering something that has not existed for years, and our piece on those files explains what they usually contain instead.
Enrolment is free on both channels. The developer channel receives each build first; the public channel gets a later, more settled build two to three weeks behind. On a device you depend on, that lag is a benefit rather than a cost — the builds carrying the serious regressions have already been replaced by the time the public channel sees them.
Free space is the requirement people underestimate. iOS 27 wants roughly 15 GB free before the installer will begin — considerably more than the download size, because it unpacks the new system alongside the one you are running. Check before you start rather than after the download finishes.
Can Your Device Run iOS 27?
Being on the compatibility list and getting every feature are two different questions. Apple Intelligence in particular is gated well above the compatibility floor — an A17 Pro or later on iPhone, which excludes several models that otherwise run the release perfectly. A device can be fully supported and still show none of it.

Getting Back Out
Turning off Beta Updates stops new builds but leaves you on the one you have until the finished release overtakes it. To go back sooner you need a recovery-mode restore from a signed IPSW, which erases the device — so the archived backup you make before installing is the only route back with your data. An iCloud backup taken on the beta cannot be restored onto the older version.
