iPadOS 26.6 has hit Release Candidate: the build Apple plans to release publicly, offered early through the beta channel. For iPad owners this is the sweet spot — current-generation stability plus the final round of fixes, without waiting for the staged public rollout.
It's also the widest-compatibility release of the two cycles we track: iPadOS 26 supports several iPads that the iPadOS 27 beta has dropped, so for many devices this is the update to get.

1Back up
Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now, or a local Finder/Apple Devices backup if you prefer belt and suspenders.

2Enroll your Apple Account
beta.apple.com, one minute, free. Skip if you're already in the program.

3Pick the iPadOS 26 channel
Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates > iPadOS 26 Public Beta. Careful not to select the 27 channel unless you actually want next year's beta.

4Install the RC
iPadOS 26.6 appears in Software Update with the RC build number. Update Now, plug in, done in about 20 minutes.

5Exit the beta afterward (optional)
When the identical public build ships, flip Beta Updates to Off — your iPad returns to the stable channel with zero side effects.
After installing
Point-release RCs are maintenance builds: expect security patches, bug fixes and battery tuning rather than new features. If Apple cuts an RC 2, it arrives automatically.
Troubleshooting
Offered the iPadOS 27 beta instead
Wrong channel selected. Switch Beta Updates to the iPadOS 26 option and refresh Software Update.
No update appears
Compare your build (Settings > General > About) with our homepage — you may already be current. Otherwise re-check enrollment status at beta.apple.com.
Update stalls mid-install
Rare on RCs; hard-restart the iPad and retry. The installer resumes safely.
Before You Start: What This Actually Involves
There is no profile to download and no file to find. Apple removed configuration profiles from the beta process in iOS 16.4, and iPadOS 26.6 is enrolled through your Apple Account instead — you sign in once in a browser, then pick the channel on the device itself. Anything offering you a "iPadOS 26.6 beta profile" download is offering something that has not existed for years, and our piece on those files explains what they usually contain instead.
Enrolment is free on both channels. The developer channel receives each build first; the public channel gets a later, more settled build two to three weeks behind. On a device you depend on, that lag is a benefit rather than a cost — the builds carrying the serious regressions have already been replaced by the time the public channel sees them.
Free space is the requirement people underestimate. iPadOS 26.6 wants roughly 15 GB free before the installer will begin — considerably more than the download size, because it unpacks the new system alongside the one you are running. Check before you start rather than after the download finishes.
Can Your Device Run iPadOS 26.6?
Being on the compatibility list and getting every feature are two different questions. Apple Intelligence in particular is gated well above the compatibility floor — an M-series chip or the A17 Pro on iPad. A device can be fully supported and still show none of it.

Getting Back Out
Turning off Beta Updates stops new builds but leaves you on the one you have until the finished release overtakes it. To go back sooner you need a recovery-mode restore from a signed IPSW, which erases the device — so the archived backup you make before installing is the only route back with your data. An iCloud backup taken on the beta cannot be restored onto the older version.

Frequently asked questions
RC or public release — is there any difference?
Typically none; the RC is promoted to public unchanged unless a last-minute bug forces an RC 2. Early access is the only difference.
My iPad can't run iPadOS 27 — is 26.6 the end of the road?
Not immediately: Apple historically ships security updates for the previous major release for years. 26.x point releases are exactly that lifeline.
Can I jump from the 26.6 RC to the iPadOS 27 beta later?
Yes — switch the Beta Updates channel to iPadOS 27 whenever you're ready; the upgrade installs like any other update.
