tvOS 26.6 is the Release Candidate for the current stable line, and it matters most for the models tvOS 27 won't reach: the Apple TV HD and the 2017 4K stay on this track, and these point releases are their security lifeline.
For newer boxes it's simply the stable choice during beta season — final-quality software a week early, with none of the beta-app roulette.

1Verify the account
Settings > Users and Accounts — the signed-in Apple Account must be the enrolled one.

2Enable Get Beta Updates
Settings > System > Software Updates > Get Beta Updates on. On the 26.x track this fetches the RC.

Select Update Software; the box installs tvOS 26.6 and restarts once. Five minutes, hands-off.

4Disable the toggle after public release
Once 26.6 ships publicly (same build), turn Get Beta Updates off to keep this box permanently on the stable track.
After installing
Nothing to babysit — RC-level tvOS updates are maintenance releases. Apps, HomeKit and AirPlay behave as on the public build because this effectively is the public build.
Troubleshooting
No update offered
The box may already run 26.6 — check Settings > General > About. Otherwise verify the account enrollment.
Toggle missing
Non-enrolled account signed in. Enroll it at beta.apple.com or sign in with the enrolled one.
Box restarted into a black screen
Power-cycle (unplug 10 seconds). tvOS recovers cleanly; persistent issues are HDMI-handshake related more often than software.
Before You Start: What This Actually Involves
There is no profile to download and no file to find. Apple removed configuration profiles from the beta process in iOS 16.4, and tvOS 26.6 is enrolled through your Apple Account instead — you sign in once in a browser, then pick the channel on the device itself. Anything offering you a "tvOS 26.6 beta profile" download is offering something that has not existed for years, and our piece on those files explains what they usually contain instead.
Enrolment is free on both channels. The developer channel receives each build first; the public channel gets a later, more settled build two to three weeks behind. On a device you depend on, that lag is a benefit rather than a cost — the builds carrying the serious regressions have already been replaced by the time the public channel sees them.
Free space is the requirement people underestimate. tvOS 26.6 wants roughly 5 GB free before the installer will begin — considerably more than the download size, because it unpacks the new system alongside the one you are running. Check before you start rather than after the download finishes.
Can Your Device Run tvOS 26.6?
Being on the compatibility list and getting every feature are two different questions. Apple Intelligence in particular is gated well above the compatibility floor, and has never been part of tvOS on any model at all. A device can be fully supported and still show none of it.

Getting Back Out
Turning off Beta Updates stops new builds but leaves you on the one you have until the finished release overtakes it. To go back sooner you need a recovery-mode restore from a signed IPSW, which erases the device — so the archived backup you make before installing is the only route back with your data. An iCloud backup taken on the beta cannot be restored onto the older version.
