macOS Sonoma 14.4 Security Update

macOS Sonoma 14.4 fixes 79 vulnerabilities, and Apple says 2 may have been exploited. Every fix, in Apple's words, with what it could have allowed.

Actively exploited — update now

What macOS Sonoma 14.4 Fixes

macOS Sonoma 14.4, released March 7, 2024, fixes 79 vulnerabilities in 50 parts of the system, according to Apple's security advisory.

Apple says 2 of these flaws — CVE-2024-23225, CVE-2024-23296 — may already have been exploited. That makes macOS Sonoma 14.4 an update to install now rather than at the weekend.

It has since been superseded: the newest security release for macOS Sonoma is macOS Sonoma 14.8.9, from August 6, 2026, which includes these fixes.

Exploited Before the Fix

Apple flags a fix as possibly exploited when it has a credible report that the flaw was used against real people before the patch. These are the reason to update today.

  • Kernel Exploited

An attacker with arbitrary kernel read and write capability may be able to bypass kernel memory protections. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited.

A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved validation.

    CVE-2024-23225

  • RTKit Exploited

An attacker with arbitrary kernel read and write capability may be able to bypass kernel memory protections. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited.

A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved validation.

Which Devices Get macOS Sonoma 14.4

Apple lists macOS Sonoma 14.4 for: macOS Sonoma.

How to Install macOS Sonoma 14.4

On the Mac, open System Settings → General → Software Update. Macs that cannot run the newest macOS are offered the update for their own version there.

Security fixes are cumulative: any later release for the same version includes these as well, so if you are already past macOS Sonoma 14.4 there is nothing to do.
