How to Check Your iPhone's Battery Cycle Count

A cycle is not a charge, and the difference explains most of the confusion around this number.

Where to find it

On recent iPhones: Settings → General → About, and scroll to the battery section. Cycle Count is listed there alongside the manufacture date and first use date. This was not always exposed and older models do not show it.

If it is not there, the Analytics route below works on any iPhone, and it is the only official way on older hardware.

What counts as a cycle

One cycle is one battery's worth of charge used, not one plug-in. Using 50% today and 50% tomorrow is a single cycle. Topping up from 80 to 100 five times is one cycle, not five.

This is why people who charge constantly often have far fewer cycles than they expect, and why the count is a better indicator of real wear than how often you reach for a cable.

What number is normal

Apple designs iPhone batteries to retain 80% of capacity after 500 complete cycles. Under 500 a battery should still be in reasonable shape; between 500 and 800 is where decline becomes noticeable; well over 800 explains poor endurance regardless of what Maximum Capacity claims.

Roughly 300 to 400 cycles a year is typical for heavy use. A two-year-old phone approaching 800 has been worked hard.

Finding it on an older iPhone

Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements → Analytics Data. Scroll to the most recent file beginning log-aggregated, open it and search for CycleCount. The value appears in the surrounding text.

It is awkward but it is genuine on-device data rather than a third-party estimate. Tapping the share icon and sending it to a Mac makes it far easier to search.

Why cycle count and health can disagree

Maximum Capacity is an estimate iOS calculates and refines; cycle count is a simple tally. A phone can show 88% capacity with 900 cycles, or 80% with 400, depending on how it has been treated — heat and long periods at full charge age a battery faster than cycles alone.

When the two disagree, trust the lived experience. If the phone does not last, it does not last. Our battery health guide covers reading both together.

Using it to decide about a used iPhone

Cycle count is the most useful single number when buying second-hand, because unlike Maximum Capacity it cannot be reset by recalibration. A seller's phone showing 200 cycles has genuinely had light use.

Check it alongside the model's remaining software support — our support lifespan data shows how many versions each model receives, which matters more than the battery for how long the phone stays useful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is battery cycle count on iPhone?

Settings → General → About on recent models. On older iPhones, use Analytics Data and search for CycleCount.

What counts as one battery cycle?

One full battery's worth of charge used, not one plug-in. Two half-charges make one cycle.

What is a normal cycle count?

Apple designs for 80% capacity after 500 cycles. Roughly 300 to 400 cycles a year is typical for heavy use.

Why does cycle count matter more than battery health?

Cycle count is a simple tally that cannot be reset, which makes it the more reliable figure when buying a used iPhone.
