How to Delete Photos from iPhone but Keep Them in iCloud

The uncomfortable truth about iCloud Photos

With iCloud Photos turned on, your library is synced, not backed up. There is one library, mirrored across your devices. Deleting a photo on the iPhone deletes it from iCloud and from every other device signed into the same account, within seconds.

There is no setting that changes this. Any guide promising to delete from the phone but keep in iCloud while syncing is on is describing something that does not exist.

Optimise iPhone Storage is the actual answer

Settings → Apps → Photos → Optimise iPhone Storage keeps full-resolution originals in iCloud and stores smaller, device-sized versions locally. Your library still shows every photo; the full version downloads on demand when you open, edit or share one.

This is precisely the outcome people are asking for — photos preserved at full quality, far less space used on the phone — reached from a different direction. On a large library it frees an enormous amount, and nothing is deleted.

Empty Recently Deleted, or nothing is freed

Deleted photos sit in Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted for 30 days at full size. Until that album is emptied, deleting photos frees no space whatsoever.

Tap Select, then Delete All. This is the single most common reason people believe photo deletion does not work.

If you want a copy that survives deletion

You need the photos somewhere outside the synced library. Import them to a computer with Image Capture on a Mac or the Photos app on Windows, copy them to an external drive, or upload them to a different service such as Google Photos — then delete from the iPhone.

That gives you the real separation: an archive that is not affected by what you do on the phone. A synced library never provides that, however much storage you buy.

Turning iCloud Photos off

If you turn iCloud Photos off, the iPhone asks whether to download a copy of everything or remove the local copies. Choosing to download requires enough free space for the entire library, which on a large one may not be possible.

Think carefully before doing this. It is easy to end up with a phone holding the only copy of your photos, which is a worse position than the one you started in.

Managing the iCloud side

Optimise Storage reduces what the photos use on the phone but not what they use in iCloud. If iCloud is what is full, the options are to delete photos — which removes them everywhere — or to buy more space.
