This covers everything from the iPhone 8 through the current line, including every SE from the second generation onwards. Press volume up and release it. Press volume down and release it. Then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears — about ten seconds — and let go.
The two volume presses must be quick and in that order. Holding either of them instead of tapping is why this fails for people; it is three separate actions, not a combination held together.
iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
Hold the volume down button and the side button together until the Apple logo appears, then release.
This generation is the only one using this particular combination, because it was the first without a mechanical Home button but before the newer sequence was introduced.
iPhone 6s, SE (1st generation) and earlier
Hold the Home button and the side or top button together until the Apple logo appears.
The classic sequence, and the one most people remember from older phones.
What it does and does not do
A force restart cuts power and boots the phone fresh. It does not erase anything, does not touch your data, settings or apps, and is not a reset in any sense. It is the equivalent of pulling the plug on a computer that has stopped responding.
It is safe to do at any time — with one exception below.
The one time not to do it
Never force restart during a software update. If the phone shows the Apple logo with a progress bar, it is writing the operating system, and interrupting that can leave it unable to boot — which then requires a restore that erases the device.

When a force restart is the right tool
A frozen screen, an unresponsive touchscreen, a black screen that will not wake, an app that has locked the whole phone, or a device stuck part-way through booting. It resolves a large share of these outright.
