What is happening in the first few days
After a major update, Spotlight rebuilds its index of everything on the device and Photos re-runs face and scene analysis across your whole library. Both are CPU-intensive and both run for hours or days depending on how much you have.
During that window the phone is slower, warmer and drains faster. It is not a fault, it is not the update being badly made, and it resolves without intervention. Leaving the phone on power and on Wi-Fi overnight speeds it up considerably, because iOS schedules that work aggressively when charging and idle.
Restart, which genuinely helps
A restart after a major update clears a surprising amount of stale state. It is the one intervention worth doing immediately rather than waiting.
Hold the side button and either volume button on a Face ID iPhone, or the side button alone on a Home button model, then drag the slider. Wait for it to come fully back.
If it has not improved after a week
Check the battery first: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. If Peak Performance Capability reports that performance management is active, iOS is deliberately throttling the processor because the battery can no longer sustain peak loads. That feels exactly like an update having ruined the phone, and it is not the update.

Free space
An iPhone with almost no free storage is slow at everything, because iOS spends its time evicting caches to make room. If the update left you close to full, that is a real cause.

Older hardware running newer software
Each iOS release asks a little more of the hardware. On a phone five or six versions past its launch, a new version genuinely does run slower than the one before, and no amount of tuning changes that.

Things that will not help
Force-quitting all your apps, resetting all settings on a hunch, or installing a cleaner app. None of these address any of the causes above, and the first actively costs battery.
Reducing motion and transparency (Settings → Accessibility → Motion, and Display & Text Size) does make an older phone feel snappier, and is the one cosmetic change worth making.
