Before an important call, or when checking a used iPhone, iPad or Mac, you want to know one thing: does the microphone actually work? This test answers it instantly. Grant microphone access, speak, and a live volume meter and waveform react in real time — if they move, your mic is picking up sound.
Nothing is recorded, saved or uploaded. The audio is analysed live in your browser and discarded moment to moment. It’s the fastest way to confirm a working mic, spot one that’s too quiet, or catch a fault before it embarrasses you on a call.
How to use it
-
1Start the test
Tap “Start microphone test” and allow microphone access when your browser asks. Permission is required for any mic test to work.
-
2Speak normally
Talk, tap near the mic, or play some audio. The volume meter and waveform should respond immediately.
-
3Read the result
Strong, responsive movement means a healthy mic. Barely-there movement suggests a blocked, dirty or failing microphone.
-
4Try each mic
iPhones have several mics (bottom, front, back). Cover them one at a time while speaking to check each is contributing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test my iPhone microphone?
Open this page in Safari, tap “Start microphone test”, and allow access. Speak and watch the meter. To check each of the iPhone’s microphones, record a Voice Memo and cover the bottom, front (near the camera) and back mics one at a time — if the sound drops when you cover one, that mic works.
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
No. The test analyses the audio live to move the meter and immediately discards it. Nothing is recorded, stored or sent anywhere — it all happens inside your browser.
The meter isn’t moving — what’s wrong?
First check you granted microphone permission and selected the right input. If it still doesn’t move, the mic may be blocked by a case or debris, muted in system settings, or faulty. On a Mac, confirm the input device and level in System Settings → Sound.
Does it work on Mac and iPad too?
Yes. The test works with any microphone the browser can access, including built-in mics on Mac and iPad and external USB or Bluetooth mics.
