Check the date and time first
This is the cause people never guess. iOS validates the update against Apple's servers using certificates, and certificate validation depends on the device clock being right. A phone with the wrong date will reject a perfectly good update with exactly this message.
Settings → General → Date & Time, and turn on Set Automatically. If it is already on, toggle it off and back on to force a resync, then retry the update.
Restart, then retry
The error is frequently transient — a momentary failure to reach Apple's verification servers during a busy release day. A restart clears the staged state and a second attempt often simply works.
On an iPhone with Face ID, hold the side button and either volume button and drag the slider; on a Home button model, hold the side button. Wait until it is fully booted before opening Software Update again.
Delete the staged update
If it fails again at the same point, the downloaded file is likely damaged. Settings → General → iPhone Storage, find the iOS update in the app list, tap it and choose Delete Update. Restart and download it fresh.
Do this on a different network if you can. Captive-portal networks that intercept traffic — hotels, offices, public Wi-Fi with a sign-in page — corrupt large downloads regularly and produce this error.
Check your network is not filtering
A VPN, a content filter or iCloud Private Relay can interfere with the verification request. Turn off any VPN under Settings → VPN, and try disabling iCloud Private Relay under Settings → your name → iCloud temporarily.
Corporate and school networks are the usual culprits here. A phone hotspot is the quickest way to test whether the network is the problem: if the update verifies over cellular but not on Wi-Fi, it is the network.
When to move to a computer
After two failed attempts, updating through Finder on a Mac or the Apple Devices app on Windows is the reliable route. The computer downloads and verifies the update itself, which bypasses the on-device failure entirely.
