1. The display
By a clear margin the largest consumer, and brightness is the biggest variable within it. A screen at maximum brightness uses several times what the same screen uses at forty percent.
Auto-Brightness on (Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size) does most of the work. On OLED models — the Pro line and every standard iPhone from the 12 onwards — Dark Mode genuinely helps, because black pixels are off rather than lit. On the LCD models it changes nothing.
2. Poor cellular signal
Consistently underestimated. A phone in a weak signal area raises its transmit power trying to hold a connection, and that is among the heaviest things the radio does. A day in a basement or a rural dead spot can halve battery life on its own.
If your drain is location-specific rather than constant, this is the cause. Wi-Fi calling helps; Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi on helps more where there is no usable signal at all.
3. Location services set to Always
An app permitted to use location Always can wake the phone repeatedly through the day. Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services — almost everything works fine on While Using the App, with navigation and weather the reasonable exceptions.
Precise Location can also be turned off per app for anything that only needs your general area.
4. Background activity from specific apps
Not background refresh in general, but particular badly behaved apps. Settings → Battery over the last 10 days, with Show Activity, exposes them: look for background time during hours you were asleep.

5. Push mail on a busy account
A mail account set to Push keeps a connection alive continuously. On a high-volume work account this is a real cost, and Fetch every 30 minutes is usually indistinguishable in practice.
Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Fetch New Data.
What saves nothing
Force-quitting apps — this costs battery, because relaunching from cold is more expensive than resuming. Turning off Bluetooth — negligible on modern hardware. Turning off 5G — very little on a current iPhone, and it can even hurt in good coverage since 5G finishes transfers faster. Battery saver apps — sandboxing means they cannot do anything useful.
